1870-10-01 THE ALLEGED RUSSIAN ARMAMENTS

London Times, 1 October 1870, p. 5: THE ALLEGED RUSSIAN ARMAMENTS. St. Petersburg, Sept. 30.

The Journal de St. Petersbourg of to-day gives a formal contradiction to a number of reports circulated by some newspapers. It denies the alleged purchase of an ironclad from the United States, as well as the rumour of a concentration of troops in the south-west, and the assertion that General Ignatieff had been summoned from Constantinople to St. Petersburg in consequence of complications having arisen between Russia and Turkey. Russia, it adds, has throughout faithfully pursued a policy of peace and prudence.
