London Times, 16 August 1909, p. 5: FATAL EXPLOSION IN A SUBMARINE. ST. PETERSBURG, AUG. 14. At 2 o’clock this afternoon an explosion occurred in the engine-room of a submarine at the Neva dockyard, as a result of which 13 men sustained burns, while one lost his life.

The accident occurred while the motors of the submarine, which had been constructed by a private firm, but had not yet been handed over to the naval authorities, were being tested. A portion of the vessel was hurled into the Neva, but was afterwards raised. – Reuter.
